Rittal – Error Code 3

Is your Rittal air conditioner showing up with Error Code 3 on the screen?

What is a Rittal Error Code 3?

The Error Code 3 on your Rittal air conditioner indicates that there’s a risk of ice forming inside the unit. This can happen when the air inside the enclosure gets too cold. To prevent this, you need to adjust the air conditioner’s settings to make the interior slightly warmer.

Recommended solution/fix steps

To fix this issue, follow these simple steps:

  1. Locate the temperature control on your Rittal air conditioner. This might be a dial, a set of buttons, or a digital interface, depending on your model.
  2. Increase the temperature setting by a few degrees to raise the internal temperature of the enclosure. This means you’ll be setting the air conditioner to cool the area a bit less than before.
  3. Wait for a while and monitor the air conditioner to see if the Error Code 3 clears. It might take some time for the internal temperature to adjust and for the air conditioner to sense the change.
  4. If the error persists, try increasing the temperature a bit more and wait again.
  5. Once the error clears, keep an eye on the air conditioner to ensure it continues to operate without icing up again. Adjust the temperature setting as needed based on the operating conditions and external temperature.

Troubleshooting to try

  • Check for a dirty air filter
  • Check your thermostat settings
  • Check your air conditioner circuit breakers
  • Check your outdoor unit
  • Check all air vents

How to restart/reset/reboot your Rittal air conditioner?

You may find your Rittal air conditioning unit needs resetting if it starts to malfunction or isn’t responding to any input via your control panel or remote control. Resetting your air conditioner re-starts the internal computer and can often restore the unit to normal working order. The exact instructions will vary depending on your model of Rittal air conditioner. To reset your controller, press buttons 1 and 3 together, at the same time, for five seconds.

Typically, this procedure will be:

  1. Turn off the air conditioning unit on your thermostat
  2. Power off your air conditioning unit
  3. Locate the reset button
  4. Press the reset button for 5 seconds
  5. Turn your air conditioning on using the thermostat

Rittal Maintenance

During normal air conditioner operation, dust, dirt, moisture from humidity or condensation, and microbial growths can build up on internal components. Left unchecked, these issues can corrode components like the evaporator coil and condenser coil. Over time, those components can become less effective and lead to a loss of efficiency or worse, a shorter air conditioner lifespan.

Regular AC maintenance and tune-ups can minimize many of the issues caused by a build-up of dirt and debris. If they are performed by an HVAC technician, these inspections allow your contractor to check for longer-term issues and in some cases take proactive steps to prevent premature failure or inconvenient breakdowns during the cooling season.

Annual air conditioner preventative maintenance may also be a requirement to keep your warranty valid as well. Many manufacturers state on warranty documentation that installation and maintenance by a licensed HVAC service provider are a part of the warranty conditions.

Cleaning your Rittal Air Conditioner

One simple way to potentially save money and prolong the life of an AC system is to make sure the outdoor unit stays clean. During normal operation, a fan in the outdoor unit pulls air through the condenser coil. Airborne dust and dirt particles and debris from nearby foliage can get lodged in the coil fins, restricting airflow and affecting performance.

Change or clean the air filters

The most important maintenance task that will improve the efficiency of your air conditioner is to routinely replace or clean the air filters. Replace one-inch pleated filters once a month. If you’re unsure of the type of filter to use, your Rittal Dealer can recommend one based on your specific system. For all other filter sizes, your Rittal Dealer will check, clean, or replace them at your annual maintenance visit. Remember, filters may need more frequent attention if your air conditioner is in constant use, is subject to dusty conditions, or you have pets in the house.

Clean the external unit

  • Turn off the power
  • Remove the front panel and remove any large debris you find in the case
  • Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft bristle nozzle to remove dust from hard-to-reach places. Be careful not to damage parts – many components can bend easily
  • Unscrew the grille on top of the Rittal air conditioner. The fan usually rises with the grille, so be careful not to damage the electrical connections
  • Wipe the fan with a clean, damp cloth
  • Clean the condenser – it has a smooth, flat surface, so the process will not take long and will not be complicated
  • Assemble the unit. Return the fan and grille to their original position and screw them back onto the unit
  • Leave the unit off for 12 to 24 hours

Remove debris from the unit

Over time, things like leaves, dirt and grass clippings will build up on the outside of your air conditioner, decreasing system capacity and reducing airflow. You should trim any shrubs or other plants back from around the air conditioner to keep from impeding airflow to and from the unit.
