Toshiba – Error Code 4

Is your Toshiba air conditioner showing up with Error Code 4 on the screen?

What is a Toshiba Error Code 4?

Error Code 4 on a Toshiba air conditioner typically indicates a problem with the indoor unit’s temperature sensor. This sensor measures the temperature of the air in the room to help regulate the cooling or heating output of the unit. When there’s an issue with this sensor, it can cause the air conditioner to malfunction, either by not cooling or heating effectively, or by shutting down entirely to prevent damage.

Recommended solution/fix steps

To fix this error, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the air conditioner: Start by switching off the unit at the main power source to ensure safety.
  2. Check the sensor’s connection: Open the front panel of the indoor unit and locate the temperature sensor. It’s usually attached to the evaporator coil. Ensure that it’s properly connected and not damaged.
  3. Clean the sensor: Sometimes, dust or debris can interfere with the sensor’s ability to function. Gently clean it with a soft brush or cloth.
  4. Reset the air conditioner: After checking and cleaning, reset the air conditioner by turning the power back on. Sometimes, a simple reset can clear the error.
  5. Test the unit: Turn the air conditioner back on and monitor its performance. If the error persists, the sensor may need to be replaced.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it’s advisable to contact a professional technician for further assistance, as the problem might be more complex and require specialized tools or replacement parts.

How to restart/reset/reboot your Toshiba air conditioner?

You may find your Toshiba air conditioning unit needs resetting if it starts to malfunction or isn’t responding to any input via your control panel or remote control. Resetting your air conditioner re-starts the internal computer and can often restore the unit to normal working order. The exact instructions will vary depending on your model of Toshiba air conditioner.

Typically, this procedure will be:

  1. Turn off the air conditioning unit on your thermostat
  2. Turn the breaker off to the outside unit
  3. Wait 30 seconds
  4. Turn the breaker on
  5. Turn your air conditioning on using the thermostat

Toshiba Maintenance

Cleaning your air conditioner shouldn’t take longer than a few minutes every fortnight. To start, simply check the instructions in your manual. If you have a new Toshiba Air single split system product, feel free to use the instructions below for the best way to clean your air conditioner.

Indoor filters

This is the most important part of cleaning your AC unit and should happen every two weeks for the life of your unit (or more if your space is particularly dusty).

To clean your filters simply follow these four steps:

  1. Open the air inlet grille.
  2. Remove the air filter.
  3. Vacuum or wash with clean fresh water and then dry the filters.
  4. Reinstall the air filters and close the air inlet grille.

Doing this regularly helps make sure that your filters are working at their optimum level to provide you with cleaner, healthier air in your home.

Use self-cleaning mode (if available)

All new Toshiba single split system air conditioners come with a self-cleaning mode that helps prevent the build-up of bad odours and humidity inside the unit. To turn the self-cleaning mode on, follow these steps:

  1. Press the on/off button on your air conditioner’s remote once when your air conditioner is in cool or dry mode. The fan will continue to run for another 30 minutes then turn off automatically.
  2. To stop the unit immediately, press the more 2 times within 30 seconds.

Run the self-cleaning function every fortnight for best results.

Clean indoor unit

Dust may build up on the exterior of your air conditioner, including on the sides of its louvres. To remove this, don’t use spray and wipes or other chemicals – simply wipe it off with a damp cloth whenever you notice dust building up.

Clean exterior unit

Your outdoor unit needs to be unobstructed so that air can flow in and out of it freely. Check your unit regularly and remove any rocks, leaves or other debris that might have built up around it. You may need to do this more regularly during autumn if there are trees near your outdoor unit.

Cleaning your air conditioner may not be top of your list of to-dos, but if you spend a few minutes doing it every fortnight, you could save hundreds of dollars, improve the air quality in your home and reduce your power bill and improve the functioning of your unit.
